Along with providing the best services and technical standards available in the sheet metal industry, SMACNA Detroit is primarily involved in labor relations activities. SMACNA Detroit, the Management Association negotiates wages, hours and working conditions with its labor partner Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation International Association (SMART) Local Union 80 on behalf of our 100 contractor members who employ over 850 sheet metal workers throughout Southeastern Michigan.
SMACNA Detroit’s role in labor relations and negotiations industry wide has, over time produced agreements that have served both Labor and Management effectively. The relationship with Local Union 80 is one key to SMACNA Detroit’s success. The many Labor Management Trustees and Committee Members ensure the labor agreements are strictly observed and fairly adjudicated creating an excellent working relationship between the Labor Union and Management Association.
Local Joint Adjustment Board
The Local Joint Adjustment Board (LJAB) facilitates a collaborative working environment by promoting labor-management cooperation to improve the interpretation of the mutually agreed upon conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between SMACNA Detroit and Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation International Association (SMART) Local Union 80. Labor and Management representatives of the LJAB respond to grievances at a local level, and when called upon provide guidance and decisions to contractors and union members seeking clarification of policies related to wages, hours and working conditions.
